The "Insieme" Center is under the supervision and direction of Fr. Maroun Harb (Lebanese missionary) who is the representative of the Euterpe Beyond Language Method (Sound in Multisensory Stimulation) in the Middle East.
Currently, the "Insieme" center is located in the region of Sahel Alma, Jounieh Kesrouan after moving a year ago from the convent of Saint Sauveur-Kreim Ghosta where it had operated for 5 years.
The center occupies the ground floor of a building and has parking for easy access to those who have difficulties in mobility.
The "Insieme" Center adopts a Music Therapy Method born about 20 years ago in Italy, EUTERPE "Sound in Multisensory Stimulation" and endorsed in Lebanon by the signing of an agreement between our association and the creator and founder of this Method Mo. Pr. Tommaso LIUZZI to closely accompany the realization of this project.
The result obtained in our center encourages us to plan projects to meet the different needs that emerge in our society, especially that "Insieme" has become a training and research center to accompany the actuality in all its aspects.
But today, the center offers not only music therapy, specialized music education, but also training for people wishing to train in this field. And, as the method is constantly evolving, the need for permanent research is imperative in order to be able to support the needs that this field requires.
Participants join the core sessions to put into practice the theoretical information acquired during training with Mo LIUZZI. While the children and young people with special needs - welcomed in our Centre, pay a symbolic participation in order to cover a part of the expenses for materials, most of our expenses are assured by the project manager P. Maroun HARB.
The Euterpe Lebanon story:
And this is how the Story began, in June 2011, when we were introduced to the Maestro Tommaso Liuzzi, during a session which included two parts:
- The first was for choir conducting,
- The second was a demonstration of a new Euterpe method of music,
In all its aspects for the service of the community, especially for persons with special needs.
11th September 2011, we were invited to experience and learn to implement the Euterpe Method. We took part in workshops which gave us the opportunity to mix with the children and young adults:
We sang together, played together, lived in their world that is so amazing which calls for a very genuine truth, full of happiness, and a variety of talents.
As much as the happiness was great, it was heart rending: why can't the youth with special needs of Lebanon have the same opportunities? Why can't they be able to progress and integrate in the community? Instead of being unaccepted and neglected.
After a short time, an agreement was signed between The Cedar of Lebanon Choir and the Cultural Association Euterpe, and the phase for the preparation of training a team to implement the Euterpe Method in Lebanon was launched.
With every new day, our hopes and ambitions to reach the largest number of youth, were growing, especially because we know that the needs are many in our society.
Euterpe, with its many and different ways, may be able to answer many questions and needs with its individuality, whether it be therapeutically, academically, artistically or scientifically.
July 2012 was the first training session for the first 2 teachers. The main objective of this session was to refine the personality and live experiences that will allow the person to transfer it, in his turn, to whoever is going to go through the same experience.
In September of the same year, work started with 5 youths with special needs and the first collaboration was with the students of "Younbou" association.
We faithfully transferred most of the workshops believing in the effectiveness of what we lived through. It gave us more self-confidence, especially knowing that music opened up new levels and different meanings with the different talents of the students.
And the ball started rolling. Session after session, team growing, and youth joining us with various ages and different special needs, are growing and developing with us, and us with them.
We broke through society together: receiving students from schools and universities, taking part in festivals, in which they were amazing, in spite of their differences.
In 2013, the Lebanese and the Italian teams shared an exchange of experience, and for the first time in Lebanon, with television coverage, our work showed off the youth and their talents.
We had sessions in order to follow up all the research that is being done by the Lebanese team, as well as the Italian team, so that we can bring together, through our experiences, all aspects of society. We also organized sessions for students interested in this type of work, and we were the first to propose this type of work in Lebanon; to work on its development and provide training sessions for it.
Several prospects were the subject of our study with the youth who went through drug addiction; with the elderly who have Alzheimer's disease; the children who have learning difficulties; and finally we lived an experience with cancer patients, within a special program with the collaboration of the psychology unit in the "Notre Dame de Secours" university hospital.
Several points crowned our progression with the youth and increased our self confidence in our individuality, with all our differences; our sense of persistence and ambition to widen our knowledge.
Workshops with clear objectives and missions that will renew the status of the youth; will show a different look to their parents; will change society towards a fair and just tomorrow, and more importantly, will give hope and service for Lebanon.
i. BUILD OUR IDENTITY: To build the identity of the individual; the identity of the individual within his/ her family; and of course the identity of the individual in society.
ii. MOUCHABAK: From the heart of Lebanese society in all its traditions and habits, we understood from this sweet, that, to look at, it looks nice, it sparkles, we serve it on festive occasions, it stays soft and is intertwined like the personality of each individual. In spite the difficulty, together, the weakness becomes a force that brings everyone together.
iii. AYEL AND BITJOUI: Two characters, joined together by one letter from each person to be born anew, refusing to be outcasts, or to be put in the shadows, or to be deprived. By the cooperation of every basic member of society: from the individual, to the family, to the association for persons with special needs or the healthy, in the metaphorical meaning, we can be pioneers in the making of a future that is worthy of us.
iv. WE BELIEVE : The four natural elements were completed by our fusion of the fifth component with all its differences, rich, and weak. . .
Unique, eventful moments, united the youth to participate in festivals. One of which was the flower festival, by an invitation from the municipality of Byblos; Christmas recitals, in collaboration with The Cedar of Lebanon Choir. We also participated in singing with the children's choir in a musical play.
c. We had more than one intervention in the KasliK University on several occasions.
i. The first time was in 2012 on the international day for people with special needs. We presented a workshop which combined the youth with the Lebanese and Italian Euterpe teams, together with The Cedar of Lebanon Choir.
ii. In 2013, we presented the results which we had achieved after one year of work.
iii. We were invited by the faculty of humanities - Psychology, to participate in a conference whose objectives were a demonstration of the ways and influences based on the arts, one of which was music, on the individual. This meeting was distinct in the participation of our youth, who made a remarkable interaction, through their music, with the audience, of which the majority were psychologists and students of psychology.
iv. One of the most important events that we took part in was in 2015, when we participated in a conference and a workshop, where the youth played their instruments with the Italian Marine Music Band. Rami and Eliza, from Lebanon took part in this event.
We are now officially known as the Euterpe Lebanon team, Insieme. It became official on the 23rd of May 2018. Recognized by the Lebanese government, and so we officially represent the Euterpe association of Italy. Our goal is to serve the largest possible segment of society and together achieve our dreams, with the youth and their parents, of a better Lebanon.
